Discover Coorg - Land of the brave and the beautiful. A video produced by Journalist P.T. Bopanna, who is known for his passion in documenting different facets of Coorg (also known as Kodagu) in Karnataka, India. Bopanna’s efforts though prolific, were so far restricted to books that he has brought out and to websites. Now, for the first time Bopanna has used the medium of video to capture the various facets of Coorg, which is a particularly fascinating part of India. Watch this five-minute preview of the video ‘Discover Coorg’ here on YouTube. Get quick and entertaining glimpses of the lush geography, the tourist sights, the Kodava people and their way of life which is quite different. The Discover Coorg video to put it briefly, features tourist spots, homestays, Coorg jewellery, the Kodava family hockey festival, and the golfing culture in Coorg. It also captures the unique warlike culture of Coorg, including the traditional tribal folk dances and even a colourful Kodava wedding. The video has been scripted and made under the creative supervision of Pattamada Sundar Muthanna, an advertising copywriter, who is equally passionate about Coorg. About Journalist PT Bopanna Bopanna is a Bangalore-based freelance journalist and author. In his three-decade career as a media professional, he has worked for various national dailies, including The Times of India, Bangalore. His first book ‘Discover Coorg’ was published in 2006 and has run into three editions. The book has also been translated into Kannada. His second book ‘Rise and Fall of the Coorg State’ created a record of sorts for a book on Coorg in English. The book was reprinted within two months of its release. This book too was translated into the Kannada and Kodava languages. In 2010, Bopanna came out with two more books – ‘Dateline Coorg’ and ‘Coorg: Land of Beauty and Valour’, a coffee table book. Pnchgani and Mahableshwer This is a travel video of panchgani and Mahabaleshwar Scenic Panchgani was discovered by the British during the British Raj as a summer resort, and a superintendent named John Chesson was placed in charge of the hill station in the 1860s. He is credited with planting many plant species from the western world in Panchgani, including silver oak and poinsettia, which have flourished since then in Panchgani. Mahabaleshwar was the summer resort of choice for the British, but it was uninhabitable during the monsoons. Panchgani was developed as a retirement place for the British because it remained pleasant throughout the year. John Chesson was deputed to find a suitable place. He surveyed the hills in this region in the company of one Mr Rustomji Dubash, (Grandfather of Kashmira, Afriz, Xerxes and Rustom Dubash), and finally decided on this nameless area in the vicinity of the five villages:Dhandeghar, Godavli, Amral, Khingar, and Taighat. The place was aptly named Panchgani, and Chesson was made Superintendent. To develop the infrastructure, Chesson encouraged various professionals - tailors, dhobis, butchers,vegetable vendors, building contractors etc. to also settle in Panchgani. The area below the bazaar was allotted to them, and is known as the gaothan. Chesson is buried in the graveyard of St. Peter Church. In 1971 or '72, his death centenary was observed in a big way when for the first time, the town folk and the schools participated together in a ceremony to remember the founder of Panchgani. Panchgani is nestled at middle of five hills in the Sahyādri mountain ranges,also there are five villages around the Pachgani are Dandeghar,Khingar,Godwali, Amral & Taighat .The Krishnā River flows nearby which made the lake of Dhom Dam on the Krishna 9 K.M. from Wai. White water stream in Mahabaleshwar. Mahabaleshwar is located at 17.92°N 73.67°E. It has an average elevation of 1,353 metres (4,439 ft). Located about 120 km (75 mi) southwest of Pune and 285 km (177 mi) from Mumbai, Mahabaleshwar is a vast plateau measuring 150 km2 (58 sq mi), bound by valleys on all sides. It reaches a height of 1,438 m (4,718 ft) at its highest peak above sea level, known as Wilson/Sunrise Point. Mahabaleshwar comprises three villages: Malcolm Peth, Old "Kshetra" Mahabaleshwar and part of the Shindola village. Mahabaleshwar is the source of the Krishna River that flows across Maharashtra, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. The legendary source of the river is a spout from the mouth of a statue of a cow in the ancient temple of Mahadev in Old Mahabaleshwar. Legend has it that Krishna is Lord Vishnu himself as a result of a curse on the trimurtis by Savitri. Also, its tributaries Venna and Koyana are said to be Lord Shiva and Lord Brahma themselves. An interesting thing to notice is that 4 other rivers come out from the cow mouth apart from Krishna and they all travel some distance before merging into Krishna. These rivers are the Koyana, Venna (Veni), Savitri, and Gayatri. Today, Mahabaleshwar is a popular holiday resort and honeymoon spot, and an important pilgrimage site for Hindus. It is the site of Mahabaleshwar Temple. Many tourists visit nearby Panchgani. After the construction of a new highway, it is only a five-hour drive from Mumbai. Mahabaleshwar is also known for the honey and strawberries produced here. One can visit strawberry farms to enjoy the real flavour of the fruit. It is said that the climate of Mahabaleshwar is ideal for Strawberries and Mulberries. One can also get a taste of "Strawberries with Cream" (season:Jan -Feb) or "Mulberries with Cream" (season: April--May). The Venna lake is one of the major tourist attractions of Mahabaleshwar. The lake is surrounded by trees on all sides. A late winter evening boat ride through the slight fog is well appreciated. Tourists can enjoy a boat ride over the lake or a horse ride next to the lake. A number of small eateries line the banks of the lake. The Mahabaleshwar city market and the S.T. bus stand is about 2KM from the lake and makes for a nice walk during the day. Most tour operators include the Venna lake in their tours. Most buses, private vehicles will stop at the Venna lake on their way to Mahabaleshwar on request. With another popular and scenic hill resort Panchgani in close vicinity (about 20KM), most tourists often visit both places together.
