Stories covered on this October 15, 2014 edition of the Nightly World News: • A Defense Department memo indicates that military commanders will be given the authority to quarantine US troops returning from Ebola ravaged nations in a secure DoD facility for 21 days. The memo, obtained by CNN, says that troops will be monitored at the facility, tested for Ebola, and treated there if necessary. The memo does not specify the location of the facility that will house the troops, but an official speaking anonymously confirmed that it will likely be a site close to Washington DC. • A tumble of more than 170 points on Wednesday was attributed to dismal retail sales data, Europe’s inability to realize an economic recovery and worries on Ebola. “Ebola is in the background,” said Peter Boockvar, chief market analyst at The Lindsey Group. “It feeds generally into global growth concerns.” Analysts are attempting to put a good face on the loss, saying a correction is not official until the market drops 10% or more. 20% over a two month period would indicate a bear market. • New York’s Westchester Community College files 631 lawsuits against students over unpaid tuition. • The city of Houston’s attempt to subpoena pastors in order to determine whether they discriminated against transgender individuals continues to cause outrage amongst conservatives, with former Harris County GOP chairman Jared Woodfill labeling the move an ominous attempt to silence free speech. • A special report on Internet trolls and military sock-puppets that are employed by the government. • A special report on the new DVD available from director Joel Gilbert, "There No Place Like Utopia."

This bizarre-looking 'alien' creature was caught by a deep sea fisherman in Singapore. Ong Han Boon, 54, was at his favourite fishing spot on the island of Sentosa where he cast his line with the hope of catching a fresh tasty treat for lunch. As he settled down with a few cans of his favourite beer, he noticed a pull, but he never expected what came up out of the sea. He said: "I spotted the line going up and down, and feeling a bit peckish I got quite excited as I hauled it in. "But when I pulled it out of the water I was completely flummoxed by what I was looking at." The creature appears to have up to 100 moving tentacle-like arms and can only be resembled to a cross between a starfish, an octopus and an alien monster. He added: "I’ve had quite a few odd things from come out of the ocean but I have never seen anything like this before in my life. It had all these arms waving around. "I thought it looked like an alien or some kind of mutant." Boon had posted his video of the bizarre creature online hoping that someone will be able to tell him what it is. "I’ve asked all my friends and none of them know and all my internet searches have not turned up anything that looks like this. "So, if no one can't identify it then I guess I’m right - it’s either an alien or I’ve discovered a new species of mutant sea creature. He added: "That would not surprise me with all the pollution they put in the water nowadays." No, this writhing mass of tentacles caught off the Singapore coast is just a bizarre relative of the starfish. It may look like an alien, or even a monstrous moving plant, but this incredibly complex-looking creature is a relative of the starfish. The basket star (Gorgonocephalus caputmedusae) was caught off the coast of Singapore and continues to wave its arms after it is pulled out of water in this video. It actually has five arms, which are each split into more dexterous 'branchlets', which it uses to catch prey underwater. The creature can live around 6,564 ft (2 km) below the waves, but typically favours life between 50 ft (15 metres) and 500 feet (152 metres) below sea level, according to experts at Oregon State University. Despite being rarely seen, basket stars live along the Pacific Coast, from the Bering Sea to southern California. Basket stars have five arms radiating from a central disk, like other members of the echinoderm family, which includes starfish, sea urchins and brittle stars. But they differ from starfish, for example, because each arm branches out into countless flexible others, which can be used by the creature to create a tangled mesh designed to ensnare plankton and even small crustaceans. These flexible tendrils act like a basket to catch prey, giving the animal its name. They position themselves in a place where there is a current strong enough to cause small creatures to drift past it – without carrying the basket star away too. The basket star spreads its arms out to create as large a ‘basket’ as possible. It then grabs prey by coiling its tendrils around plankton and small animals. Very little is known about the animal’s eating habits, but it is known that the spines and hooks on its arms, as well as mucus, make it hard for prey to escape its clutches. Experts at the university explained: ‘The basket star wraps several branchlets around its prey, forming a knot. This knotted arm is then drawn toward the central disk. ‘The manner in which food is transferred through the disk to be digested is not yet known.’ Basket stars can have a central disk that is five-and-a-half inches (14cm) in diameter and each of their arms can be up to five times longer than their body. Another triple digit move on the Dow Jones today as markets were pummelled on the back of concerns about the spread of Ebola. The Dow Jones tumbled 223 points, the S&P 500 tanked 31 and the NASDAQ shed 62. The small cap Russell 2000 index was the best performer as it only fell 4 points while Canada’s main index lost 233. The VIX skyrocketed, moving higher by 16%, while the yield on the 10 year was basically flat to finish at 2.28%. Crude prices were down again as WTI fell 1 percent and Brent lost almost 2 ½% while the gold price moved higher by just over 1 percent. European markets were broadly stronger with the FTSE putting on 26 points and the DAX adding 24. Asian markets were mixed in overnight trade as the Nikkei fell 178 points, the ASX 200 lost 32 and the Hang Seng gained 55. In foreign exchange markets the US Dollar was stronger against most of its major trading partners.
