On Monday the S&P 500 closed below its 200 day moving average, amid weakening world economic reports and concern over Ebola. Airlines were down sharply as investors feared travel bans might be instituted to contain the spread of the virus. On Tuesday, things calmed down a bit with the indexes closing about the same. Energy stocks continued declining as crude oil prices slid down. On Wednesday, retail sales for September were released and they were down .3% month-to-month, below expectations and the Empire State manufacturing survey for October slowed significantly to 6.2 compared to the prior month’s five-year high of 27.5. This too was unexpected. Markets were down significantly, however, recovered much of their losses later in the day. On Thursday, jobless claims for the week ending October 11 were down 23,000 to 264,000. This is its lowest level since April 2000, and this news didn’t affect the market much, however, St. Louis Federal Reserve Bank President James Bullard’s statements that the Federal Reserve should consider postponing the end of its bond purchase program, helped halt another downward spike by the end of the day. On Friday housing starts for September rose 6.3% over August to a little over a million units. Altogether the S&P 500 is down nearly 10% from its high point, however, early Friday stocks rallied on hope that the Fed will continue its easy money policy. Now let’s take a look at some stocks. Shares of Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) climbed 2.1 percent during regular trading, the company projected better-than-expected revenue for the holiday season. Sears (NASDAQ: SHLD) jumped 23 percent after announcing its plans to raise capital. But technology giant IBM (NYSE: IBM) fell 7.1 percent on a reduced outlook. Tuesday turned out to be the best day of the year for the S&P and NASDAQ. It was a day of strong market gains which cemented the view that the worst is probably over. Apple, Texas Instruments (NASDAQ: TXN), and Verizon Communications (NYSE: VZ) all surged on corporate earnings, while Coca-Cola (NYSE: KO) and Chipotle (NYSE: CMG) were active to the downside. Existing home sales rose a solid 2.4 percent in September. Year-on-year, however, sales remain flat. U.S. earnings season was in full swing on Wednesday, but stocks ended sharply lower following a drop in oil prices. Also a shooting inside the Canadian parliament was cited as a negative factor. The Labor Department Consumer Price Index was up 0.1 percent in September, illustrating tame inflation that should allow the Fed to keep interest rates low for a time. On Thursday stocks got a lift from Caterpillar (NYSE: CAT) and GM (NYSE: GM) earnings, as well as data signaling stronger economies from China to Europe. But AT&T (NYSE: T), Yelp (NYSE: YELP) and Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) earnings were on the downside. Initial jobless claims did rise up 17,000 to 283,000, but it’s still slightly better than the previous market consensus. On Friday new home sales jumped to 6-year high in September, hitting 467,000 units. But this surge was only after August number was revised down. Microsoft rallied 4% after its earnings topped market projections. Now let’s take a look at some stocks.
